from johannesburg

Ah, the classic Johannesburg to Drakensberg road trip!

It’s about a 7 hour drive from Johannesburg to Glencairn. Here’s how to make the journey as smooth and enjoyable as possible:

1. Start Early

Hit the road early to beat the traffic and make the most of your travel day.

2. Overnight Stops

If you want to break up the trip, Harrismith is about the halfway point.

3. Must-Visit Pit Stops

  • The Windmill: This stop is famous for its delicious pies. It’s the last ‘major’ stop before you hit the Underberg roads. Trust us, you’ll want to stock up! Find The Windmill
  • Engen Bergview One Stop near Harrismith: A great place to refuel, grab some snacks, and stock up on biltong. There are various food options, so everyone’s cravings are covered.See more here

4. Final Stretch

The last 100km of the road includes some potholes, so it’s better not to drive there after dark. Plan to arrive while the sun’s still up to avoid any surprises.

1. The Epic Road Trip

If you’re up for a long drive, it’s about 1600km and roughly 16-18 hours of driving time. The scenic route is filled with beautiful landscapes, but it’s a long haul, so consider making a few overnight stops.

2. Flying to Durban or Pietermaritzburg

Save some time and energy by flying into Durban or Pietermaritzburg.

From Durban, it’s about a 3 hour drive to Glencairn, and about 2h from Pietermaritzburg. Rent a car at the airport and enjoy the scenic drive up to the venue.

3. Flying to Johannesburg

Another option is to fly into Johannesburg and then drive down to the venue. This route is about 600km and takes roughly 7 hours by car. You can follow the same driving recommendations as mentioned for those starting from Johannesburg, including all the great pit stops and overnight options.

general tips

Car Rentals

Car rentals are straightforward in South Africa, but remember to request an automatic if you’re not comfortable with manual (stick shift) transmission. Most rentals are manual by default.

Driving

South Africans drive on the left side of the road. Keep this in mind, especially if you’re used to driving on the right.

Potholes

The last stretch to Glencairn has some potholes. It’s part of the adventure, but to keep things safe, plan your drive to avoid night-time travel on this section.

Whether you’re coming from near or far, the journey to Glencairn is part of the adventure. Safe travels, and we can’t wait to see you there!
