International Travel

For our friends coming from overseas, we want to give a few travel tips to make your journey smooth and enjoyable. Please ensure that you check with your embassy on the exact visa requirements to enter South Africa.

visa requirements

Before you travel, check the visa requirements for South Africa with your local embassy or consulate. Here's a helpful link to get started: South Africa Visa Information

SIM Cards and Mobile Data

Getting a local SIM card is a good idea to stay connected. You can purchase SIM cards at major airports, mobile network stores, and convenience shops. Popular providers include Vodacom, MTN, and Cell C. For more information, visit their websites: Vodacom, MTN, Cell C

Car rentals

If you plan to rent a car, it's straightforward in South Africa. Major car rental companies are available at airports and city centres. Remember to request an automatic car if you're not comfortable with manual (stick) transmission. Here are some popular car rental services: Avis, Hertz, Budget

Money matters

Cash: South African Rand (ZAR) is the local currency. It’s advisable to carry some cash in smaller currency. Car guards welcome tips in cash. You can exchange money at the airport, local banks, or forex bureaus. If your bank allows, you can also withdraw money in local currency from the ATM.

Using Bank Cards: Credit and debit cards are widely accepted. However, inform your bank about your travel plans to avoid any issues. ATMs are available in most places for cash withdrawals.

Groceries and Essentials

For groceries and everyday essentials, supermarkets like Woolworths, Checkers, and Pick n Pay are reliable options. You can find them in most towns and cities.

Health and Safety

Health: It’s a good idea to have travel insurance that covers health. Check if you need any vaccinations before your trip. For more info, visit: CDC Travel Health

Safety: South Africa is generally safe for tourists, but like any destination, it's wise to stay alert. Avoid displaying valuables and be cautious in unfamiliar areas.

Driving in South Africa

South Africans drive on the left side of the road. Ensure you have an international driving permit if required. Roads are generally in good condition, but watch out for potholes, especially on rural routes. Plan your drives to avoid travellingafter dark when possible.

Tipping

Tipping is common practice in South Africa, and it's a great way to show appreciation for good service. Here are some general guidelines.

Restaurants and Cafés: It's customary to tip between 10% and 15% of the bill. If the service is exceptional, feel free to tip more.

Hotels: Porters usually receive about R10 to R20 per bag, and housekeepers can be tipped around R20 to R50 per day.

Tour Guides: A tip of around R50 to R100 per day is appreciated, depending on the level of service.

Petrol Stations and Car Guards: Attendants who help with filling up, cleaning windows, and checking oil usually receive a tip of R5 to R10. Car Guards at shopping centres or restaurants would appreciate a similar amount.

Emergency numbers

Keep these emergency numbers handy:

  • Police: 10111
  • Ambulance: 10177
  • Nationwide Emergency Response: 112 (from mobile phones)

Weather & packing tips

December is our summer season, which means you can expect lovely warm weather with temperatures ranging from 15°C (59°F) at night to about 30°C (86°F) during the day. Pack plenty of shorts and t-shirts, but don't forget a pair of long trousers and a light jersey for those cooler evenings. Oh, and a raincoat – we have quick, dramatic afternoon thunderstorms, but don’t worry, they’re more of a theatrical performance than a weather nuisance.
